By Leonie Kooiker, illustrated by Carl Hollander, translated from the Dutch by Richard and Clara Winston
From Holland comes a story of sorcery in modern dress, in which magic occurs, as part of the everyday, for those who have eyes to see.
Chris found the magic stone when he stole a ride in Frank’s grandmother’s wheelchair. At first he did not realize the stone was unusual and was startled by his new-found ability to read the minds of others and control their behavior. Then one day, he followed Grandmother, encountered the members of the Fine Thread Association, and so discovered that she was a witch. He also learned that magic wasn’t always fun. But by then, it was too late, for Grandmother had decided that Chris should become her successor, despite her colleagues’ disapproval and Chris’ unwillingness, and she set about getting her way.
